oh yes there we are it's great
wonderful wonderful how lovely to be
here again twice within the past three
minutes oh my goodness I don't know what
was happening there I'm sorry about that
but everything went slightly wrong my
connection YouTube would not connect no
one would connect in fact everything was
going slightly wrong there for which I
apologise here we are once again yes we
are back with you live on YouTube and
this is without a doubt I am 100%
certain that this is English addict
coming to you live from the birthplace
of English which just happens to be
England
I'm not sure what was going on there
I hope you can see me clearly
unfortunately I don't know why I have no
idea but the connection today is very
strange very unusual perhaps it's the
wind
have you noticed outside did you see at
the beginning there is quite a strong
wind blowing today outside there it is
so that is the view right now outside
the window and the wind is beating
across the Shropshire Hills and also
crashing into my house as well
it is very unsettled out there very
windy not only that but also there is
something else happening here today we
have some damage to repair on the roof
of the house so there are some builders
at the moment on the roof of the house
repairing the roof and it has nothing to
do with the wind so it's nothing to do
with the wind nothing serious they are
just doing some slight repairs to the
roof so a lot of things going on today
not just that but also my internet would
not connect for some reason I don't know
why so I've changed the speed of my
internet today so the streaming today my
stream is coming to you at a slightly
different rate so if the picture is not
clear please let me know but I am having
to use some different settings so you
can see me Oh besides that everything's
ok yes I am happy because I've made it
to the end of another week and guess
what so have you it's Friday
hmm I don't know if I'm coming or going
I really don't what a day so far I've
only just started and I've had enough
already I hate it when my technology
doesn't work properly and I'm sure you
feel the same way as well here we go
then the Sun is out even though it's
windy here in England yes I am in the
studio hi everybody this is mr. Duncan
for those who don't know who I am I'm in
England I teach English I talk about the
English language I do live streams as
well you can watch my live streams three
times a week just like you are watching
me right now Sunday Wednesday Friday is
when you can catch me here on YouTube 2
p.m. UK time it is always the same time
so it's very easy to remember and also
if you want to have some live captions
to help you understand what I'm saying
well guess what you can press C on your
keyboard and you will have as if by
magic live captions and of course if you
are watching on your mobile device you
can also go to your settings on your
mobile device and you can activate the
actual captions so if you go to your
settings on your mobile device maybe
you're watching on your smartphone your
iPhone or maybe a tablet device you can
activate the captions as well it's as
easy as that and then you will be able
to follow everything I am saying
hopefully we have a busy one today we
have so much to talk about I'm going to
show you also something for
last year a lovely memory from last year
I know at the moment a lot of people are
miserable and happy upset because of all
of the things happening in the world and
let's face it there is a lot of stuff
going on right now around the planet in
fact there's a lot of stuff going on
above the planet as well lots of things
happening memories we are talking about
memories today we are going to have a
look at one of my English lessons where
I talk about memory so that is coming
later on also we have a lovely memory
from last year when mr. Steve and myself
we went to visit a lovely country a
beautiful place mr. Steve was very lucky
yeah last year we had a very lucky year
2019 was quite a good year let's just
say it was a lot better than this year
if I can be quite honest with you now
last year mr. Steve won not one but two
holidays through his company because he
had been working so hard so last year we
went to Paris for a few days we didn't
pay for it
it was all mr. Steve's company that paid
for it and then we had another holiday
we went to Portugal a wonderful time
a wonderful place in fact I had never
been to Portugal before ever in my life
so I thought it would be nice to have a
quick look at something nice a nice
memory let's be honest everything at the
moment is a little bit stinky and
horrible so I thought why not have
something nice to remember a nice memory
so here we are a year ago walking around
Portugal
I hope you enjoyed that a little blast
from the past as we say something to
remember from last year when we went to
Portugal and mr. Steve was very lucky
and so was I because I was allowed to
join Steve on his prised holidays I must
admit I had a lovely time it isn't very
often that you get to have two holidays
that you don't have to pay for it all
however Steve did work very hard and he
did earn those holidays so we had a nice
time Portugal a wonderful place I
recommend that you go there I went to a
place I stayed in a place called sintra
not very far away from Lisbon well in
fact it was quite away but nearby near
than Scotland nearer than Scotland is
that's all I can say
hello also to the live chat oh I haven't
said hello yet I'm glad to see you all
here some slight technical problems
however I have reduced the speed of my
bitrate I'm sure that means nothing to
most of you in fact it means nothing to
me
as well but that's what I've done I've
reduced my bitrate so hopefully I am now
streaming more smoothly than I was ten
minutes ago here we go then the live
chat is up and running nice to see you
here as well hello to Mohsen also Vitas
lolli lolli nice to see you as well can
can karna hello to you as well Thomas
also we have Beatriz and Peter you are
all first on today's live chat
congratulations and thank you for
joining me
not just once but twice
and I can I compliment you on your
wonderful patience so you didn't just
click on my video want once you actually
joined me twice because of my
disconnection amazing thank you very
much
we have Belarus er is here as well
nice to see you back also Robyn is here
Robyn Hakim Irene
also we have Lille here today thanks for
joining me
yes it was a little bit difficult today
a lot of things going on not least of
all the fact that there are people
crawling around on the roof of the house
making lots of noise also I'm here as
well on a very windy day and I couldn't
get connected to YouTube
unfortunately Lena is here hello Lena
nice to see you as well Valentina
Irene well a lot of people here already
also we have sandy hello sandy Adele
nice to see you here as well
thank you for joining me also we have
Morril dare
watching in Brazil nice to see you here
as well a lot of people are now joining
again oh we have Pedro Belmont to see
you nice to see you Pedro's welcome back
also we have pal Mira and also mohei
also we have hoose na we have Massimo
even in Rome apparently in Rome
there is also a strong wind blowing that
has damaged some roofs wow that is one
of the problems with strong wind if your
house is old like this one you might
have a little bit of damage however I
think this house the problem with the
on this house is that for over 50 years
it's been beaten and blown against lots
of things have happened to it over the
years so I think over the years it has
become damaged so that's why we are
having to have some repairs made on the
roof of the house unfortunately we have
no choice
hello mica mica ODE is here as well
watching in Japan can I say a big thank
you by the way - oh can I say thank you
- chin Jun you for your kind donation
for your very kind donation on paypal
thank you very much for that
for your lovely donation and whilst
we're talking about donations can I also
say thank you to my patreon donators as
well
Mika once more hello Mika again
ding by Andrew Julie Hanna
Oleg and also Michael thank you very
much for your lovely donations your
regular donations on patreon as well so
thank you very much for that I do
appreciate it of course I do because
through your help I am able to do this
for free it costs nothing and I've been
doing this for ever such a long time how
long a long time a very long time in
fact by the way next month on the 16th
of July it will be 4 years since I
started doing my live streams so next
month will be an anniversary for years
I've been doing this almost my live
streams and of course I've been teaching
here on YouTube for nook for almost 14
years a very long time indeed hello Cory
hello also era tomorrow Roxy hello to
you as well
hello franceska and a Coby Wow
so many people are joining me today
thank you very much for giving up your
Friday it is the end of the week we have
made it all the way to the end of the
week and of course this is the first
week of June as well
although it doesn't feel very summery
outside at the moment it does not oh
thank you very much for your lovely
comments about my little video clip in
Portugal thank you very much
Cory says you are coming with pictures
from Portugal
what a coincidence because of course
Luis Mendez hello Luis I can see you
thank you very much for your lovely
message as well yesterday thanks for
your email letting me know that you were
watching on Wednesday thank you very
much
and of course Luis Mendez originally is
from Portugal ts is here also we have
Zoar hellos or Lina I remember my
wonderful time in London in 2011 a week
before Easter and also in 2013 three
weeks in July oh I see so you've been to
London twice so once in 2011 and once in
2013 I hope you had a good time at the
moment not many people are travelling
around for various reasons I'm sure you
know why here in the UK we have been
told that from the 15th of June when we
go outside we will have to wear face
masks
I know it's a little bit late it feels
as if we should have been doing that
three months ago but no from the 15th of
June we are all recommended and also
required in fact to wear masks if we are
traveling on public transport or if we
are going into a place where there are
many people you have to wear a mask and
if you don't have a facemask they can
ask you to leave so that is all
happening here in the UK from the 15th
of June this year
well 2020 we're not even halfway through
the year yet we're not even halfway
through what a what a horrible year this
is bheem I can't wait for 2020 to end to
be honest Mary is here hello Mary
I wrote a runs err hello to you as well
Abdulla is here hi everyone most of us
here are trying to be good at English
and learn through mr. Duncan's dreams
but it's not enough we have to practice
so if there is some interesting
practicing please let me know well I
suppose there are many ways of
practicing your English maybe you can
watch a movie with captions so there are
many ways besides watching YouTube there
are other ways as well maybe reading a
book maybe writing something that you
copy from a book if you are going to do
that always make sure you are doing
something that you are interested in an
interesting subject or something you
enjoy reading about because then it
makes it more interesting
hello's or hello also two and a peeker
is here as well nice to see you
what is the subject for today
lots of things today we are talking
about well of course it's Friday so we
will be doing the sentence game we are
having the sentence game today the
sentence game the sentence game is
happening today also some strange
English words and another thing that I
thought was interesting we are going to
look at some polite nice ways of
swearing I know we all do it we all do
it from time to time I sometimes do it
sometimes we use bad language when we
are angry or upset we might do it
it does happen from time to time yes so
I thought today it would be interesting
to have a look at some some ways of
swearing but politely you can swear in a
very polite way so that is something
we're going to do a little bit later on
polite swearing it is possible to swear
to get all of that anger out without
offending anyone so that's something we
are going to look at as well yes the
sentence game is coming later on I will
invite you all to join in with the
sentence game we will also be looking at
one of my full English lessons and also
one of my lessons that I made all about
the subject of memory because we are
remembering things today and I was
remembering my lovely holiday last year
with mr. Steve curse words yes
curse words if you swear you use curse
words you use bad language
but there are ways of doing that without
being offensive and I will show you that
in a few moments we will have a look at
that in a few moments Valeria says I
really need to learn that
well I suppose from time to time we all
get a little bit angry we all say things
that we don't mean quite often we will
swear especially if we are in pain or
maybe someone has upset us all made us
angry so yes it can happen I think so
polite swearing so let's have a look
shall we
it is possible to swear politely when
you lose your temper you might say
something that sounds rude but it isn't
for example maybe you are using a hammer
and then suddenly you you hit your
finger with the hammer you strike your
finger which causes a lot of pain and
you will say fudge fudge so you are
saying something that sounds rude but it
isn't it is a way of releasing that pain
you are expressing the pain through your
words fudge we do this a lot in the UK
if we want to swear but we don't we
don't want to offend anyone we will say
oh oh fudge we might say what the fudge
what the fudge by the way fudge if you
are wondering is a very sweet type of
food very sweet some people don't like
to
fudge because it's very sweet very
sickly but fudge is something well I
like fetch to be honest I am a big fan
of fetch hmm what the fudge what the
fudge you might also say oh fudge
oh fudge and you can say that you see
it's not it that's not rude
that's not swearing it is a very normal
word a very simple word it is not
offensive oh fudge it's making me laugh
now you can just fudge off oh fudge off
what the fudge oh fudge you can just
fudge off you see so instead of saying
something in polite or something that is
rude you are simply saying fudge oh
fudge would you like to see another one
here's another one sugar Oh sugar so you
are not saying anything rude instead of
saying a bad word you are saying
something that is innocent and
inoffensive
Oh
sugar Oh sugar so you are still
expressing your anger or your pain but
you are not swearing your body doesn't
know that and all of the people around
you will not be offended
Oh sugar Oh sugar I like that one that's
one of my favorites to be honest I think
that one might be the most commonly used
if I was honest I think sugar Oh sugar
he's often used here's another one Oh
Frick Frick this is another one it is an
expression that is often used in the USA
in American English you will often hear
this word used in anger when a person
gets angry they might say Frick what the
Frick
why don't you Frick oh you are so
freakin freakin annoying so there they
are so there is another word that people
use in American English
I always remember there was a TV show
called scrubs who remembers scrubs and
quite often the word Frick would be used
in that program Frick so it is a way of
exclaiming your anger or your pain or
your frustration Oh Frick it isn't a
swear word because it was on Scrubs they
use that word quite a lot
oh dear here's another one this seemed
like a good idea at the time I'm
suddenly regretting this to be honest a
person who is an idiot or a stupid
person or maybe they are contemptible
you might you might describe them as an
a-hole see I don't think that's so bad
that is a lot better than saying the
actual word so you might say that
someone isn't a whole is that bad I'm
not sure can you hear the sound above my
head it sounds like the builders have
gone back to work on my roof I might get
a little bit annoyed myself in a minute
here's another one Oh beggar beggar
beggar you might use this word sometimes
when you are angry when you are feeling
frustrated let's have a look shall we
why don't you beggar off oh you naughty
man
you stupid beggar
you stupid beggar now the word beggar in
this respect doesn't mean a person who
is homeless it is just being used
instead of another word so these words
are not actually being used in their
context or their proper context they are
just being used as substitutes for a
word that might be offensive or a word
that might get you into trouble beggar
why don't you beggar off
you stupid beg people used to say that a
lot when I was growing up to me I don't
know why I really don't know why they
would say that to me why would they do
that
I don't know so there is a word you can
use as a substitute for a swear word
here's another one we often use the next
one in British English Tosh Tosh I don't
believe you it is all Tosh what a load
of Tosh
this means nonsense something that is
nonsense something that makes no sense
something that you don't believe you
might say I don't believe you it is all
tosh what a load of Tosh and that is
often used in British English we will
describe something as Tosh Tosh so these
words are not offensive I won't get into
trouble for using these words because
they are simple words normal words
average words you see here's another one
I like this one this is one of my
favorites by the way Fiddlesticks
if you are feeling angry annoyed or
upset about something you might say Oh
Oh fiddlesticks Oh fiddlesticks
and that means well it doesn't really
mean anything to be honest it is just a
way of getting your anger out by saying
something so it isn't offensive it isn't
upsetting I'm waiting for the builders
to come crashing through my roof I
really am Fiddlesticks
Oh fiddlesticks it is an exclamation it
is a way of vent
or expressing your pain or frustration
Oh Oh fiddlesticks
Oh sugar oh fudge here's one oh I'm only
going to put this on the screen for a
few seconds this is only going on the
screen you will have to look quickly at
this one are you ready so this one is
very rude although it isn't rude but the
meaning is rude so you might have to
pause the video here it is right now and
that's it so that was the last one that
one is really rude I'm not going to go
any further into that one so even though
the sentence isn't rude the meaning can
be very rude shall I show you it again
okay very quickly there it is that's it
that's all you're getting that's all
you're getting I'm not showing that for
more than half a second
I would like to stay on YouTube for a
little bit longer if you don't mind
hello Abdullah is here hello
Abdullah we are talking about
alternatives to swear words so words
that we often use that are rude and
offensive there are other words you can
use instead
for example sugar Oh sugar sugar it's a
simple word however you can use it as an
alternative to a very naughty word
you don't say that someone is
fiddlesticks
you just say it as an expression so you
don't say that someone feels filled
fiddlesticks
it is something you say it is an
expression so it doesn't describe
anything it doesn't describe a person or
their feelings it is just something you
say as a way of expressing your anger
yasya is here hello also fly or die in
my opinion what's worse is often the
tone that some people have isn't isn't
it true or isn't that right yes you are
right sometimes a person can speak to
you with a very unfriendly or rude tone
so the tone of someone's voice can
actually be rude even if the words they
are using are not maybe you go into a
shop new or you are in a bad mood and
perhaps you've been waiting for a long
time to be served and then when you
finally get to the salesperson your tone
is very rude when they serve you you say
thank you well you can hear the tone of
my voice is actually unfriendly so even
though the words I'm using are friendly
and polite my tone is not I am being
maybe sarcastic so I am being rude
unfriendly because of the tone of my
voice so sometimes it is interesting you
can say very innocent things but
sometimes you can still sound very rude
very impolite so yes that's that's a
good point I like that
Robin says if you say Jar Jar it means
yes yes in Germany but also the meaning
is very bad okay then I won't say it
again fly or die a gentleman will not
use a rude tone no however a person
might lose control of their emotions so
they might be feeling frustrated or in a
bad mood so they might use and friendly
or rude words yes you are being
sarcastic or ironic you are saying it
but you don't really mean it you don't
mean it I like that we're going to take
a break in a moment so those are some
words we can use instead of swearing I
think I have a good idea because we have
been talking about memories today so
here is an excerpt from one of my
lessons that I made a few years ago all
about the subject of memory and this is
not the full lesson this is just an
excerpt so you are going to see some
small parts of that lesson however if
you want to see the full lesson the full
lesson is underneath this video the link
is below in the description so let's go
back in time and have a look at one of
my earlier lessons where I was talking
all about memory
hi everybody this is mr. Duncan in
England how are you today are you okay I
hope so are you happy I hope so in
today's lesson we are going to look at
one of the most fascinating processes to
take place in the human body the thing
that helps to make all of us the
individuals we are the place where the
experiences we have had and the
knowledge we have acquired is stored it
is something that even now we do not
fully understand in today's lesson we
will be discussing the human memory
the important things we do and see stay
in the memories of you and me the
moments from our childhood remain
precious and treasured the limit of the
memory cannot be measured as we make our
way through this life with all of its
joy and pain those happy memories long
since gone in time will make a smile
again and again
the word memory is a noun that defines
the place where information is stored
memory can also be the thing that is
being remembered a memory of something
is stored in the memory the action of
remembering involves retrieving the
information from the memory computers
have memory as to humans although the
way they are designed and operate is not
quite the same a stored memory can be
anything your first kiss the first time
you ever rode a bike the day your pet
goldfish died all of these significant
memories are stored away somewhere up
here in my previous lesson I talked
about our senses I also mentioned the
fact that the things we sense such as
light and sound create information which
is stored in the memory when we see or
hear something the information created
passes through the brain it is then
filtered so as to decide whether the
information is important enough to be
stored permanently this system prevents
the brain from becoming too cluttered
with an important or useless information
there are many similarities between the
way in which the human brain stores
information and the computer sitting in
front of you now in computer terms
stored information is called data a
computer stores data electronically in
its memory the brain transmits and
stores information in the form of
electricity and chemicals when a piece
of information is transmitted in the
brain and electrical pulse travels along
the nerve and fires across a gap to a
cell the gap is called a synapse there
are trillions of these synapses in the
human brain the signal carrying the
information is then transferred
chemically where it attaches itself to
the cell one single brain cell can have
thousands of these synaptic connections
the number of cells contained in the
brain is constantly changing as you
learn new things then new cells are
created to store the information in as
amazing as it may sound it is actually
possible to change the structure of your
brain by learning new things recently it
was discovered that even by carrying out
a daily task in a slightly different way
it is possible to stimulate the growth
of new brain cells
by using your memory you are retrieving
information that is stored in the brain
selves you are consciously searching for
the information you are recalling an
event from your past you are thinking
about something you are reminiscing you
recall you think you recollect you
reminisce you remember
of course not all of our stored memories
are happy ones in fact some people might
say that they recall the bad moments of
their past more easily than the good
ones a terrible event or a distressing
occurrence can have a profound impact on
the way we think a traumatic event not
only blemishes your memory it can also
affect your character stress and anxiety
are both common side effects of going
through a terrible ordeal so while our
memory gives us the ability to remember
the good things it also stores many of
the things we would much rather forget
it is possible to misremember things
sometimes we add parts to a memory so as
to give it more form just because you
remember an event does not necessarily
mean that's how it actually occurred it
could be an inaccurate memory your
memory can play tricks on you
childhood memories tend to be made up of
fleeting moments and small events that
play in the mind like a short video clip
these distant memories can be happy or
sad good or bad
mmm there it was one of my many many
English lessons that you can find on my
youtube channel and yes the address is
underneath and all of the playlists are
also underneath this video as well
mm-hmm it's getting noisy the workmen
are now right above my studio right
above my head there are people working
on my house because over the years parts
of the house have fallen off so these
nice men working above my head are now
putting all of those pieces back isn't
that lovely although you might actually
hear a little bit of noise a little bit
of disturbance whilst I'm talking to you
for which I apologize however mr. Steve
I think we can blame Steve for this
it's mr. Steve's fault because it was
him that arranged it you see Steve
arranged for the builders to come here
so this is his project not mine it's
nothing to do with me so that is what is
going on I hope you're feeling good
today
it is it is a very strange day it sounds
as if we might have some special guests
in a moment crashing through my ceiling
I hope not hi everyone I hope you are
feeling good we are going to play the
sentence game today by the way we are
playing the sentence game I know a lot
of people like playing that and that is
what we are going to do today would you
like to look at it's simple and
interesting and interesting
shall I just go off for a few moments
and come back this is slightly
distracting I'll be honest with you I
could never be a reporter do you ever
watch the TV and you see those reporters
and they are reporting live from a war
zone and there's all sorts of things
going on around them there there there
are explosions and all sorts of things
happening and yet they stay completely
calm and they they stay focused on what
they are talking about I could never do
that I would be so distracted by
everything that's going on around me
hello emolia Oh Emilio hello Emilio nice
to see you as well
awesome lesson as all of the ones you
have done you are the best mr. Duncan
yes there are some of my English lessons
that I call my epic lessons so something
that is epic is big and something that
is extravagant or something that goes on
for a long time might be described as
epic so I have over the years made some
very long English lessons that go on for
maybe 30 or 40 minutes and they are
covering normally one particular subject
please please don't come through my
ceiling please thank you so yes I have
made some epic lessons including a
lesson all about memory also reality one
of my favorite lessons that one also I
did a special lesson all about the
Samuel Johnson I'm really distracted by
this sound above my head Samuel Johnson
who of course compiled the first ever
English dictionary I also made one as
well I'm thinking of using a swear word
at the moment oh fudge oh dear
so those those words that I gave you
earlier are not actually swear words
they are alternatives they are
alternatives to swear words so they are
not rude but it is a way of venting or
expressing your anger without offending
anyone around you which i think is
lovely here's an interesting idiom have
you ever heard of this idiom I'm going
to show you an animal and believe it or
not there is also an idiom connected to
this particular animal there it is oh
it's so cute I remember at school when I
was a little child we had a guinea pig
in our classroom and during the summer
holidays they would always ask one of
the students to take the guinea pig home
to take care of it during the summer
school holidays and one year they asked
me so one year we actually looked after
the school guinea pig and I still
remember his name his name was William I
know it's a strange name for an animal
so yes there is a guinea pig however
there is also an expression an idiom
that can be used in English as well
would you like to see it we can also use
guinea pig as an idiom to be used as a
test subject normally if you are testing
something or experimenting maybe a new
product or maybe some new medicine it is
often used when we are describing a
person being used as a test subject or
maybe an animal that is being used as a
test subject for the trial of a new
product or medicine we can use the
expression to be used as a guinea pig so
you might say that someone who is being
tested on maybe there is an experimental
drug or a product you might describe
that person as being a guinea pig even
though they are not a guinea pig but it
is actually being used as an idiom so if
you experiment on someone if you are
testing something to make sure that it
is safe so anyone can be a guinea pig
even a human being
can be used in a test as a guinea pig
you are testing a product you're testing
something on a person they are being
used as a guinea pig interesting I love
the English language because there are
so many strange words that exist in the
language itself talking which would you
like to have a look at some strange
words here are some unusual words some
unusual words would you like to see
something unusual here is an unusual
word an unusual strange English word Oh
mr. Duncan I've never seen this word
before how do you describe this word Oh
Lina is going see you later Lina catch
you later
hopefully see you on Sunday mr. Steve
will be here yes he will be here with us
on Sunday the word you can see now on
the screen is pronounced jostle jostle
jostle if you push shove if you try to
get through a crowd of people
if lots of people are pushing against
each other they jostle maybe you are
trying to push your way to the throat to
the front of a group of people jostle
struggle fight against you are trying to
get through a crowd of people jostle
jostle a very unusual word it is an
action you are doing it you are jostling
maybe you are trying to reach a certain
position in your company so maybe two or
three people are trying to get ahead in
their company maybe one person is going
to be promoted so many people try to get
that one position they will jostle they
will push they will try to get to the
front jostle a very unusual English word
here's another one forage oh and like
this one forage it is a word it is an
action if you forage for something it
means you search you forage normally
through a certain area or a certain
location you forage maybe you are
trapped alone in a forest maybe you are
looking for food maybe you have to
search for something to eat
you forage forage for food you search
for food you are trying to find
something to eat
you forage you search you look in a
hungry way for something I like that one
here's another one oh I like this one
cackle cackle this describes a sound
maybe a laugh maybe if a woman is
laughing or an old lady is laughing in
an evil way is the description of that
sound
a person will cackle cackle maybe the
sound of a witch laughing as she flies
over at night during Halloween she
cackles cackles I love that word I like
it very much
cackle here's another one another
strange English word and yes these are
real words they are real words here is
another one ooh
splurge splurge it's an interesting word
actually splurge because it sounds like
something that is coming out maybe
something is coming out quickly maybe
water maybe a volcano is erupting and it
will
splurge
however this word means something
completely different
if you splurge it means you suddenly
spend a lot of money you splurge you go
out and you do a lot of shopping you buy
lots of new clothes maybe you buy some
new shoes maybe you buy a new hat maybe
you buy lots of jewelry to where you
splurge you suddenly go out and you
spend a lot of money you went out
yesterday you went to town and you
splurged you had a good splurge you
splurge your money you spend your money
on many things you treat yourself to
something nice you go out to do some
shopping you splurge mm-hmm here's
another one if I can find it oh - yes I
like this word again a very unusual word
it is a real word it describes a certain
type of thing a thing that has a certain
effect or it gives you a certain feeling
or emotion Oh teos some people pronounce
it osius you can pronounce it as odious
or oto s' something that is odious or
oto s' is something that is pointless or
meaningless something that has no point
something that is a waste of time
something that has no meaning it is
meaningless
it is odious it is an English word and
it is real I know one thing I love
revealing these strange words because I
have a feeling sometimes
you might not have heard of these words
before so maybe for you some of these
words are actually new maybe you've not
heard them before
hello I come here for the first time
your voice is very comfortable to listen
to thank you very much that's very kind
of you to say my name is Duncan I live
in England I am an English man and I
talk about the English language and
right now we are talking about unusual
strange English words oh here's another
one
this describes a type of action an
action the way you are doing something
can you pronounce this word I will help
you to pronounce it don't worry I'm not
going to make this too difficult here is
the word schmaltz ooh I like that one
I hope the subtitles will produce a good
translation of this word schmaltz
something that is described as schmaltz
is something that is over
sentimental something that uses too much
emotion or uses it needlessly too much
emotion over emotional too much kissing
too much romance a little bit is okay
but too much you might describe it as
schmaltz that movie oh my goodness that
couple the story oh all of their all of
their love story it was it was full of
schmaltz it was too too emotional there
was too much love there was too much
kissing there was all it was too much it
was too much we described it as
schmaltz so it is possible it is
possible to have too much emotion maybe
you are trying to create an emotional
feeling in your audience you are doing
something to make them feel emotional we
might describe that as schmaltz schmaltz
it's a great word Vitesse says what
about Saba stuff yes well we are doing
something that is trying to to create
emotion a certain type of emotion maybe
love or sadness too much sentimentality
sentimentality it is too sentimental too
much too much here's another one oh I
like this one here's a great word used
quite often in American English yes I do
talk about American English and British
English words as well this particular
one is used in American English and I
love this word it is so expressive
bupkis bupkis if you have bupkis you
have nothing you have no money you have
nothing you can say that you have bupkis
you have nothing maybe you are playing
cards with your friends you are trying
to win some money and they ask you to
show your hand they want to see the
cards that you are holding in your hand
and you say I know I'm not going to win
I've got bupkis but kiss I've got
nothing I've got nothing here nothing
here that is useful it is bupkis
and this apparently comes from Yiddish
which means nothing to have nothing so I
love that
schmaltz also sounds Yiddish yes I
believe it is actually and bupkis as
well I heard this word the other night
on television I heard someone say bupkus
and I thought that is a great word so I
wrote it down and that's why I'm using
it now on today's livestream bupkis
I love that so much would you like to
have a look at another word one more
before we carry on reticent
if a person is reticent what does it
mean does anyone know I wonder if anyone
knows what this word actually means if
you are reticent reticent what does it
mean does anyone know I will say a
special hello and a round of applause
for the first person that gets that
right
what does reticent mean you might
express a person who is what as reticent
reticent anyone no apparently Sergio
says bupkis in Russian means money
that's interesting I like that so I'm
learning something now I like that a lot
bubkis you have nothing nothing I like
it
if a person is reticent what does it
mean you are reticent does anyone know
we will be playing the sentence game in
a few moments if anyone knows what
reticent means please let me know
Vitesse thank you for your guests
does anyone else know I've got no idea
what reticent mean
okay then anyone else the same word also
in French oh I see yes thank you Anna
something you are reluctant to do you
don't want to approach that subject you
are reticent
Ritt esand thank you very much thank you
Anna
and also stanislav yes you don't want to
talk about something you are being
reticent reticent you are being
reluctant to do something maybe you
don't want to say something you are
hiding something
you are being reticent thank you also
Corrie Vitesse stanislav Anna thank you
very much
and
I promised that I would give you a round
of applause and there it was reticent to
be reluctant you don't want to say
anything you don't want to give anything
away you don't want to reveal any
secrets you are being reticent I like it
it is time now to take a look at one of
my full English lessons and then we will
be back we will be back live with the
sentence game so don't go away we will
be back and we will be playing the
sentence game in just a few moments time
oh thank you thank you for that lovely
round of applause isn't it nice to
receive a warm welcome a polite greeting
offered to someone as they appear is a
warm welcome you are pleased to see
someone so you offer them a warm welcome
an audience might clap or applaud the
action of a group of people clapping is
a round of applause
you can also applaud someone for their
achievements you give praise and
encouragement to someone by telling them
how happy you are for them you applaud
them I know what you're thinking now mr.
Duncan when are you going to start
today's full English lesson that is a
very good question so without any more
delay let's get on with today's full
English lesson right
now how are things going with your
English studies are you progressing well
are you happy with the way it is going
or are there some annoying difficulties
you are experiencing right now one of
the biggest problems with learning a new
language is appreciating how well you
are doing it is very easy to
underestimate how well you are
progressing with your English learning
you might think you are doing much worse
than you actually are
this is one of the reasons why you might
need to build some self-confidence in
not only your ability to learn but also
to appreciate how far you have come with
your studies
during my time I have mentored many
students who have an unrealistic view of
how much they have learned try to avoid
always comparing yourself to other
English speakers as I said in the
previous lesson you must not put too
much pressure on yourself learn to
appreciate how much you have learned be
proud of what you have achieved so far
learning is a journey and on that
journey it is useful to take a look back
now and again to fully appreciate how
far you have come with your English
Studies
it's time to take a look at another
buzzword a burst word is a word or
phrase that is popular during a certain
time or is generally used today's
buzzword is privilege the word privilege
is generally used as a noun and means a
special right advantage or immunity
granted or available only to a
particular person or group in this sense
the word is used to show inequality or a
certain bias towards a particular social
group some people see privilege is a
thing enjoyed only by a certain race or
someone with a high social standing it
always seems to be the privileged few
who get into a good university the
privilege might be there from birth
examples of which include being born in
a particular country to a certain social
class or of a certain race the topic of
privilege has become a hot subject over
the years the perception that one social
group has more rights than another often
relates to the notion of privilege we
can also use privilege to express the
honor of doing something it is a
privilege for me to be here with you all
again another use of privilege relates
to the right of a lawyer
or official to refuse to divulge or
reveal confidential informations the
private or confidential conversations
between a professional and their client
can be classed as privileged information
it cannot be disclosed the phrase check
your privilege is used to suggest that
someone should recognize that their
attitudes or views reflect the fact that
they are in a privileged or advantageous
position because of their particular
social category or categories
to which they belong for example there
is the concept of white privilege which
suggests an inherent bias or favoritism
towards those who are Caucasian the
original meaning of the word privilege
literally means private law and comes
from Latin with the original definition
expressing a particular law affecting an
individual we are back live hello
everyone welcome it is Friday afternoon
and the weekend is just around the
corner Oh
I think the builders have disappeared I
think they've gone so there will be no
more banging above my head yes I think
they've gone unless of course they're
fallen off the roof anyway
either way it's quiet now hello everyone
thanks for joining me today I hope
you've enjoyed today's English addict
live stream coming to you live from the
birthplace of English which just happens
to be England yes here we go then would
you like to play the game the game that
everyone is playing all around the world
yes it's the sentence game
okay don't calm down calm down everyone
calm down stay calm don't get too
excited we still have another half an
hour to go before the end of today's
livestream so please stay calm you might
need a piece of paper and a pen to help
you with this it is very simple very
easy to play you can all play along
wherever you are in the world all by the
way can I say hello to Tonya art hello
Tonya
nice to see you back again I haven't
seen you for ages
for such a long time I haven't seen you
here we go it's very simple all you have
to do is look at the sentence however
there will be some gaps there will be
some spaces that you have to put one
word into and today I'm doing it
slightly differently because I'm going
to also show you an answer as well on
the screen so I'm going to make it more
interesting by actually showing you an
answer afterwards so first I will reveal
the sentence and then what I want you to
do is tell me what those words are the
words that are missing in the sentence
I'm going to show you nip right now so
are you ready to play the sentence game
hello aivars can I say hello now yes you
can I have just arrived from work hello
I've asked nice to see you back here
again time does fly apparently when you
are having fun I don't know if that
relates to my livestream I'm not sure
here we go then and there it is on the
screen right now buddy
things blank looking blank for the blank
things blank looking blank for the blank
all you have to do is put a word in
those spaces put one word only one word
I have to be very strict you see one
word in those spaces things something
looking something for the something any
ideas
don't worry I won't rush you I am NOT
going to be rushin I'm not going to rush
any of you at all yes Tanya it's nice to
see you again where have you been
we've missed you where have you been we
haven't seen you for such a long time
welcome back anyway things something
looking something for the something it
is the sentence game you can play along
at home you can play along wherever you
are whatever you're doing maybe you are
at work maybe you have returned to work
after the lockdown maybe you are still
in lockdown in a few days we will have
to put we will have to start wearing
face masks again here in the UK we are
all going to have to wear them we have
no choice if you go outside you will
have to wear your face mask from the
15th of June make of that what you will
things blank looking blank for the blank
any ideas things will be oh there's two
words there you see the
we'll be looking good for the summer
things will be looking good for the
summer I suppose you could do that but
there is only one word there you see
only one word I know I know Sergio I
know you are going to complain you are
going to say mr. Duncan ear ear mr.
Duncan you're too strict why do you make
it so difficult for us
well the reason why I make it so
difficult is because uh well that's why
that's why we have quizzes games
questions they are all there to help you
think about the English language so
that's the reason why Thank You Vijay
things were looking for for things were
looking for for the master things were
looking well in this sense this is not
the action of looking so we are using
the word looking in a very different way
here we are looking at it as a point of
view so a point of view so you are not
directly looking at something you are
talking about the way something appears
appears so if you look at something you
are looking exactly and straight at it
however looking can also mean your your
sense of a situation or the way you view
something Oh
Hiroko hello Hiroko Hiroko tani I
haven't seen you for a while hello
Hiroko things are looking worse for the
country I like it
things are looking worse
for the country that's a good one I like
that one
I like that a lot
yes that is a good one even though the
sentence is negative it is a negative
sentence however this is something many
people have said recently things are
looking worse for the country maybe the
situation is getting worse I think so
Sergio says things are looking English
things are looking English for the UK
I'm not sure if that is grammatically
correct so in this sense the word
looking is expressing maybe the feeling
you have about the future or a current
situation things are looking they are
looking good
they are looking bad so this does not
have to be a negative sentence it can
also be a positive sentence I will show
you in a moment
tomorrow says things are looking
fashionable and nice enough for the
evening party well that is a lot of
extra words in that sentence however I
do I do actually like your sentence I
like it you see things are looking
fashionable and nice enough for the
evening party so if something looks
fashionable it looks up-to-date it looks
modern stylish maybe I like that good
things were looking the same for the
children
things were looking the same for the
children something that hasn't changed
we can say that it looks the same
however I don't think it fits in here I
don't think it fits in this sentence
things are looking bad things are
looking bad for the using maybe for the
quite often we will have a noun or some
thing that describes a thing things are
looking bad for the what we had a good
answer earlier country so country so at
the end of that sentence you are going
to put and now on things are looking bad
all of course you can say things are
looking good so it doesn't have to be a
negative sentence this sentence can be
positive or negative
things are looking bad for the country
things will be looking better for the
summer again a good answer
slightly too many words but yes things
will be looking better for the summer or
maybe you could say things will be
looking better when the summer arrives
or when summer arrives
some very interesting answers here by
the way Moe he says things are looking
bad for the moment yes I like that is
actually a very good answer
mm yes I like that one things are
looking bad for the moment for the
moment means at this present time at
this time things are looking bad for the
moment for the moment means this
particular period of time for this
moment
things are looking bad for the moment
things are looking bad right now
you could also say things are looking
good for the moment some very
interesting answers by the way can you
say hi to Solange and Evelyn says gene
or gen gene
Pinero can you please say hello to
Solange and also Evelyn
hello Solange and Evelyn nice to see you
here thank you for joining me on my
English addict live I hope you are
enjoying this as much as I am the things
are looking difficult for the human
beings
things are looking difficult for the
maybe you could say people for the
people for the people the population
things are looking good for the
population the people things are looking
bad for the population
things are looking awesome for things
are looking awesome for the moment yes
things are looking good things are
looking awesome
things are looking great for the moment
so maybe it is something that is
temporary something that is only going
to last for a short time for the moment
for the moment I don't know how long it
will last
but maybe it will only be here for a for
a short time it will be here for the
moment oh I did absolutely nothing
during my quarantine days but now I'm
here and I brought some new books oh
okay then good are they exercise books
are they English books good I will give
you my answer right now can we say look
things look well you can say things look
but you don't need to put something
there so you might say things look bad
for the future things look bad for the
future so it's basically the same
meaning however we are talking generally
about a current situation
things are looking looking bad this is a
situation that is happening now things
are looking bad I will have a look at
one of my answers so here is one of my
answers to this things are looking bleak
for the economy
things are looking bleak for the economy
so this is my answer you can see the
sentence structure things are
that means that is actually happening
things are looking bleak so a very
similar word two bad things are looking
bleak things are looking gloomy things
are looking negatively or negative for
the economy so this is something from
the news that we've heard recently about
many countries that are now suffering
from economic crises they are suffering
crises plural of crisis things are
looking bleak for the economy something
a lot of people have been saying
recently during these strange weird
times here's another one oh okay then
here's another one
I will not rush you don't worry I'm not
going to rush you here it is
things aren't looking easy for the
planet things aren't looking so good
maybe Thank You Lina I thought you were
going Lina Lina you said you were going
but now you've returned I can see you
you can't stay away for very long hello
also to Malia
oh hello Malia nice to see you back here
is another one don't something stand
something do blank don't blank stand
blank do blank fill in the gaps there
are some gaps there are some spaces and
in those spaces I want you to put a word
in each of those spaces we will be going
in ten minutes by the way we will be
going in around
out ten minutes time a lot of people on
the live chat Michelle says it's too
hard
now last week a lot of people complained
that it was too easy so I always try to
make some of them easy and some of them
hard
don't stand do any ideas ah
okay then Vitas Vitas that is a good
answer
you are very close very close there I
like that one
don't be stand dull do something now I
think I know what you are trying to say
there I think I know what you are trying
to express and it is the same thing that
I am expressing here it's the same thing
however the grammar is not right
unfortunately don't you stand up do it
says Sandra Moe SEM don't look
stand up also we have real horror
stories be up set down don't be stand no
unfortunately once again the grammar is
not right so stand means to be in one
place maybe a person is not moving so
you are giving them an instruction an
instruction so this is actually an
instruction you are saying to someone
you are telling them to do it don't
something stand something
do ah lolly lolly lolly lolly that is a
good answer yes I like that one
that gets a round of applause definitely
lali lali don't just stand there do
something useful well in fact you don't
have to say useful in this sentence you
can just say don't just stand there do
something don't just stand there do
something
so perhaps you are having an emergency
maybe your fire your house is on fire
and your neighbor is looking at you
hello and you say to your neighbor don't
just stand there do something so maybe
you want your neighbor to help you
perhaps you are trapped in the house you
are shouting from the house because the
house is on fire you can't get out and
your neighbor is just standing there
like a silly sausage doing nothing so
you say don't just stand there do
something don't just stand there please
do something help me I will show you the
answer that I have here don't just stand
there do something we are playing the
sentence game and there is my answer
don't just stand there do something
please help me don't just look at me
don't just stand there do something I
need help please
please give me help I need some
assistance don't just stand there do
something
here's another one I think we have time
for maybe one or maybe two more before
we have to go here is another one
we are playing the sentence game Oh
I think a lot of people will get this
they will get this I think so so I think
many people are going to get this one
you can blank anything blank you blank
blank blank to it what could that be
you can blank anything blank you blank
blank blank do it I will give you a
chance don't worry
yes don't just stand there
have you ever had that situation where
you've been in trouble and someone is
just watching you they're not helping
you
they're just looking and you say don't
just stand there do something so here is
another one you can blank anything blank
you blank blank blank to it Oh Christian
rendang you can be anything if you put
the effort if you put the effort to it
you can do anything if you make the
sacrifice if you make the sacrifice to
do it I like that one I like that's a
good one yes I like that one so both of
those Nicole Christian and also
Sergio is well you can do anything what
you want but do it hmm
well the last two words are to it not do
it to it but you are very close
hello English with escaped or Ashgate do
that want to do hmm
you can do anything very close very near
yes very near hello rush you can do
anything if you put your mind to it
thank you very much to rush
Dermott
that's a pretty good that's a really
good piece of advice I must say that is
a really good piece of advice yes I will
show you the full sentence you can do
anything all you can't achieve anything
I think this word is much better so this
is a much better word you can achieve
anything if you put your mind to it so
this is a great way of reminding
yourself that if there is something that
you want to do in your life if there is
something that you want to learn about
this crazy world around us maybe there
is something that you are interested in
well guess what you can achieve anything
if you put your mind to it
achieve I suppose you could also say do
you can do anything if you put your mind
to it you can achieve anything so I
think this word is much better I think
this word is a nice word to use achieve
in your life as you go through school as
you go through your education quite
often you will achieve things and of
course as you go through life as well
you will achieve things quite often you
have to put a lot of effort a lot of
time into doing it Wladimir you can get
anything if you will try to do it
you can get anything if you will try to
do it
to do something is an action but
sometimes we don't want to do it maybe
sometimes we think that doing something
is too hard however sometimes you have
to put your mind to it
you have to think hard you have to work
hard you have to do something maybe over
a long period of time remember you can
achieve
anything if you put your mind to it you
can do anything if you properly prepare
to it we normally say prepare for it so
you don't prepare to something you
prepare for something because prepare is
before before you see so prepare is
always before something happens you
can't prepare for something after it has
happened you have to prepare for
something before so you have to prepare
for it because it hasn't happened yet so
all preparation happens before the event
not after high it is nice seeing you
here before the end Thank You Helena I
will be with you for a few more moments
and then I will be going we have another
one would you like another one okay I
think we've got time we've got enough
time for one I think okay quite a few
here quite a few blank spaces I
something beam something some something
for my something holiday
thank you for jaw forger news no this is
no just this is hard work hard listening
writing speaking reading you have to put
your hard work into it yes when we talk
about hard work we mean effort effort so
something that is hard to do quite often
you will have to work harder you will
have to put more effort into it whatever
it is you are doing quite often in life
things require a lot of effort a lot of
work so here's the next one
i blank beam blank some blank for my
blank holiday all you have to do is fill
in the gaps put one word in each space
one word now this particular sentence
expresses something that you intend to
do something you will do in the future
something you are planning for quite
often if there is something you want to
do sometimes you have to plan for it you
have to do some planning preparation
quite often when you want to do
something you need money yes and this
sentence refers to that
I have no correct answers yet Thank You
Stefano I have been there some days I
have been there some days for my holiday
but what type of holiday connell Thank
You Colonel I have been given some money
for my summer holidays that is a very
good one
I like that a lot yes that's a good one
Thank You Colonel I have been given I
have been given some money for my summer
holiday I like that
good hello also English with Ashgate
are you a teacher of English by the way
are you a teacher of English do you
teach English I have been doing some
hard work in my summer holiday I have
been doing some hard work for my summer
holiday hmm
well first of all we don't have in we
have four so this is something that you
are planning for this is something that
you are planning ahead for so it hasn't
happened yet you are planning ahead for
something I have been doing some work I
have been doing some work for my summer
holiday hmm not bad but there is
something else that you are doing in
this sentence something you have been
doing so you can have your summer
holiday I for I've been doing something
for my holiday what have you been doing
quite often you we need money you need
money when you want to do something if
you want to go on holiday quite often
you will find that you need money to do
it unfortunately I have been buying some
clothes for my summer holiday I have
been buying some clothes for my summer
holiday I like that one
so yes you are planning ahead I have
been buying some clothes for my summer
holiday there is another one though
there is another because quite often you
will need money
Agustina hello Agustina I have been
saving some money for my next holiday I
have the same thing look there it is
that's exactly what I had on my screen I
have been saving some money for my next
holiday I have been saving some money
for my next holiday quite often when you
want to do something and if it's
something that might cost a lot of money
you have to save for it so this sentence
is saying I have been saving some money
for my next holiday so in this sentence
we have something you have been doing
and something you will do in the future
I have been saving some money for my
next holiday and oh no I can't believe
it that is almost it I can't believe we
have come to the end of another lesson I
can't believe we we have almost reached
two hours two hours I've been in with
you thank you for your answers today so
many answers I am going to look through
your answers later I always like to read
the live chat now what happens
sometimes this is what happens sometimes
sometimes when I'm doing my live chat I
might not see all of your messages so
what I like to do I like to watch the
live stream but I'm I don't watch myself
because that would be very narcissistic
don't you think but instead I like to
read the live chat so I always like to
watch the live chat again later on and
of course you can also watch this later
as well on YouTube with captions I have
been earning some money
for my summer holidays yes English with
ash cat that is a good one as well I
have been earning some money quite often
if you are a student quite often if you
are a student who is struggling you are
going to university however you don't
have a job you might have to take a
part-time job to save some money so you
earn a little money and then you save it
so yes that is something you have to do
sometimes you are right
you have to earn money to save money if
you like what you see today please give
me a lovely like and subscribe give me a
thumbs up and subscribe as well if you
like what you see please give me a
lovely thumb and then YouTube hopefully
will recommend my videos to everyone
else
Christian Rendon says it's good to see
you as well to improve your oral
communication and I don't think it will
be narcissistic okay then well maybe
some people might think it because I'm
watching myself you see so if I watch
myself maybe I'm narcissistic however
I'm not but I do like reading the live
chat
later on so I will have a close look at
all of your messages later on today you
can watch this again as well you can
watch all of this again later on it will
be on YouTube forever and ever
